Melanotan II (often abbreviated as MT-II or referred to as "the Barbie peptide") is a synthetic analogue of the peptide hormone \(\alpha \)-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (\(\alpha \)-MSH). Developed originally at the University of Arizona, it acts as a non-selective agonist of melanocortin receptors in the body, which, when activated, trigger melanogenesis (the production of melanin) to cause skin tanning without the need for UV exposure.
